Tokyo Designers Week 2011

There were a lot of exciting things happening while I was in Tokyo. Tokyo Designers Week 2011 also took place while I was there. I visited this event on the last day of my trip and I am so glad I did not miss it! I was not able to take many photos from inside the venue but here are some that I can share with you!

I wish I had more time to see everything! Here are photos from the Container Exhibition:

The exhibition site was set up for music, food, the bar, and exhibitions.

There were some super amazing designs inside the exhibition hall also but I couldn't take any photos. Maybe next time I will have to get my hands on a Press Pass so I can share more with you!

Design Tide Tokyo

While I was in Tokyo during the Design Week, there were many exciting events taking place! One of them was Design Tide Tokyo.

The event was incredibly inspiring! The exhibition is comprised of many new designers who exhibit their creations...many of which are still in the prototype stage. It is really interesting to talk to them and see how they came up with their ideas. Many have not gone to the stage of commercializing or determined if it is feasible to produce their designs yet. It is so interesting to hear their aspirations and dreams when you talk to the designers...

There was a special Cooperated Project with Jonathan Adler for Lacoste which was part of the Design Tide exhibition...

The colorful shirts were definitely signature Jonathan Adler style!

These are also being featured in the store window of Barneys New York store in Ginza, Tokyo!

While I was in Design Tide, I ran into Jonathan Adler...who invited me to the Jonathan Adler for Lacoste party taking place that evening at Mercedes Benz Connection.

Yummy!!

It was a fun and unexpected evening with Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan (who happened to also be celebrating his birthday)!

I like their shirts. I used to wear these during the 80's preppy phase! The new colors and styles are much cooler than the ones I had!

Here are the photos of the beautiful display at the Interior Lifestyle Living Tokyo exhibition. My new partners in Japan, Rivers, did such a wonderful job of the display and with the color combinations of the collection! It is so nice to see people playing with the different ways to mix the colors together and I absolutely love it!

The possibilities and color combinations are quite endless...

I have so much to update you on since my last posts! I was in Tokyo, Japan! It was so exciting and wonderful and I have so much to tell! First of all, my collection was exhibited for the first time in Japan at the IFFT Interior Lifestyle Living Exhibition on November 2 - 4, 2011. This is through a partnership with a new distributor in Japan called Rivers! You can also read more about this by clicking here.

It has all been very exciting and I have photos to share with you! The exhibition took place at Tokyo Big Sight...

I've always wanted to visit Croatia since I have heard it is very beautiful. Maybe someday soon...

Somehow, Tina Frey Designs makes the debut in countries before I personally get the chance to visit. Take a look at the press in the November issue of a magazine called moja 4 zida! It's unfortunate I cannot read it...but it looks like a great home decor magazine!

Pinch Food Design and Press!

The incredible duo behind Pinch Food Design was featured in the November 2011 issue of Food & Wine Magazine! They have the most unique way of presenting and serving their guests for parties and events. I love their aesthetic and the food they prepare looks so incredibly tasty! I was so thrilled that they selected my dishes for their catering events!

Obsessions Privées at Maison & Objet

Couplicité at Maison & Objet

You may recall my previous January posts from Maison & Objet here and here and here. The fair is amazing and it is so inspiring to see all the incredible designs in one place. There are these curated mini-exhibitions based on some theme and they are so interesting!

This one is called "Couplicité" and talks about how "in a world more full of solitary than solidarity, union is power and people are reinventing the world as couples..."

Here are some photos of the collections based on that theme. I'm not sure I could quite explain some of these things or how they relate. But they are very interesting anyway. I hope you enjoy my little tour!

High Line Park

While in New York, I finally had an opportunity to visit High Line Park.

This urban park runs along Manhattan's West Side from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street. It is a highly unusual "park" since it is a lovely green oasis amidst the tall skyscrapers all around. It is basically a re-purposed overpass built in the 1930's to lift dangerous freight trains off Manhattan's streets. You can still see the remnants of the tracks in the ground along the park. Here are some photos from my walk along this amazing space!

Perhaps you get the idea of the setting around this park. It is very urban but there are green areas and places to sit and watch the world go by. I particularly enjoyed the architecture of the buildings all around. Here is what I saw...the shiny new buildings...

Popsicle

As I was mentioning in my earlier blog post, I have been REALLY behind on my postings. These photos were taken when I was in New York in August and it was extremely hot out. I was eating this delicious Blackberry-Rose-Flavored popsicle and I just couldn't help but document it.

Calvin Klein

When I arrived in New York for the exhibition in August, I could hardly believe my eyes. The taxi from the airport drove along 60th Street on the way to my hotel. I looked up and I saw something very familiar in the window of the Calvin Klein Collection boutique and it made me smile.

So of course I had to make a visit to the store since my designs have been included in their Home Collection since previous seasons. The colors I make match their collections but this particular one for the season is very nice! This is the Signal Red tray.

The Home Collection at Calvin Klein is absolutely beautiful! I want everything in the store. You must visit if you are in New York. They are on the corner of Madison Avenue and 60th Street.

I couldn't help but notice they also had that lovely blue color in their window!

I've been so super crazy busy with the travels and trade shows that I have fallen quite behind on my blogging! Where do I start again?! I have so much to tell you since I last blogged. I guess continuing on where I left off is a good place to start...

The last time I blogged, I was just off to New York. That feels like ages ago now (and it was) but here are some photos of what Tina Frey Designs looked like at the New York International Gift Fair. I went with the all black background for this exhibition.

If you are ever able to attend the New York Gift Fair, you will find me in the Accent on Design division.

I think the colors look quite dramatic against the black background. This is quite a contrast to the Spring 2011 shows!

I added a few furniture pieces to the collection! Here is the side table and stool. It is available in Grey and Cobalt Blue for Fall 2011.

I wanted the Fall 2011 colors to focus on the Cobalt Blue, Grey, and White. Here are some photos of how they look together.

Like peas in a pod

I think the new set of three bowls on the dish looks like peas in a pod from above. They are new designs for Fall 2011!

These new additions are part of the Square Collection! I love how everything mixes and matches together so well. Yet they are wonderful used on their own also!

I am not a crystal goblet...

A new goblet style has been added to the Pedestal Collection that was introduced in Spring! These were inspired by the classic Baccarat Harcourt crystal goblets!

Here is where the inspiration came from...the Darkside Collection by Phillipe Stark for Baccarat.

For the collection, Philippe Stark examines the difficulty in achieving perfection with his boxed set...one perfect goblet and five others, each with a subtle flaw. The style is the No.3 Harcourt crystal goblet. Of course, my collection is all "imperfect" since they are all handmade to have subtle differences between each goblet!

Supper at Quirk Gallery

If you are in Richmond, Virginia sometime between June 30 - August 27, you can make a visit to Quirk Gallery! Tina Frey Designs is part of a group installation called "Supper".

The installation explores unique table settings with some of their favorite artists which includes Chris Milk, Melody Gulick, and Christopher Jagmin! We each reinterpret "Supper" using mixed materials with unique variations of theme.

Of course my installation involves the use of my resin homewares in a rainbow of colors! Here are some photos from the Quirk Blog!

The installation is displayed on the Cyclone Dining Table by the prominent Japanese American artist and landscape architect, Isamu Noguchi. This was supplied by Metro Modern and you can find it here. It is quite a classic!

I like the mix of the colors and organic shapes against the clean white modern table. You can purchase the items from the Supper Installation through the Quirk Shop. Here is what you can find:

Theoxenia

I've been wanting to post the photos of the beautiful hotel we stayed at while in Mykonos, Greece. The Mykonos Theoxenia is a small boutique hotel that has recently been refurbished with a fresh modern aesthetic and glam retro sixties theme by the famous interior designer, Angelos Angelopoulos.

I am daydreaming about visiting again...

The room with a view and sounds of the sea...

I love the mix of turquoise blue and chartreuse green!

The bar where you can be fabulous while having fabulous cocktails.

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day...this is where we lingered every morning.

The outdoor terrace with the filtered light was so sublime.

I spent quite a few hours here working on my tan and studying the insides of my eyelids.

This blue was very much the inspiration for the Fall 2011 colors for Tina Frey Designs!

I love the contrast of the perfect coral red in the lampshade.

No detail was overlooked since even the choice of wine had a label that matched the decor perfectly! It was delicious too!

The devil is in the details...but they were not overlooked here! How cute are these slippers?

The Parker

Each time we visit Palm Springs, we stay at the Parker. This hotel was decorated by Jonathan Adler and the interiors and selection of furnishings is his signature quirky cool style. I am always inspired by these colorful vintage vessels displayed on a ledge in the entrance area. I love the combination of colors and I've tried to take a photo many times to try to capture these vessels. I hope these photos do them justice!

I would love to make these colors with my resin vessels. Let me know what you think!

Yoshitomo Nara - The Dog!

Mediterranean

It looks like I wasn't the only one who made a little trip to the Mediterranean recently! So did the Tina Frey Designs Homewares! They made their way to Greece for a photo shoot and here is the result in the June 2011 issue of Cote Sud Magazine! The photos turned out beautifully!!

Here is a closeup of the blue resin dishes on page 53. The blue color of this collection was very much inspired by the blue sea.

The colors of the bottles at this bar in Athens was most inspiring! The place is called Brettos. They have a wonderful selection of wines, ouzo, liqueurs, brandy, and olive oil!

Most of the colorful bottles are their home-made liqueurs created according to old family recipes in delicious flavors!

There's Orange, Apple, Banana, Cherry, Citron, Cocoa, Coconut, Coffee, Hazelnut, Mango, Masticha, Parfait d'Amour, Peppermint, Rose, Watermelon...

Yummy!

Laundry Day in Greece

Feeling Electric Blue

I've been falling in love with this shade of blue recently. I wonder if anyone else is feeling this way...please let me know if you like it!

It all stared with my love of this clutch by Celine. I LOVE everything by Celine... but this electric blue is so incredible! Here is another photo of this great clutch being carried by Taylor Tomasi-Hill (my fashion idol). She is the Style & Accessories Director for US Marie Claire Magazine.

Then there were these beautiful "Poppy Bow" shoes by Isabel Marant. I love them!!

You can find these at net-a-porter. Too bad they are out of my size!!! Aaargh! (...maybe that's a good thing...I don't need another pair of shoes...)

It's all in the wrist...

You may recall my blog post about the Tina Frey Designs resin cuffs here. I love wearing a cuff on each wrist since I think it makes a nice fashion statement with a pop of color. Sometimes I wear two different colors, and sometimes I wear the same matching color. You can never get enough of the Wonder Woman Cuff or the Cleopatra Cuff! (Zoe seems to like it...)

I was just obsessing over my favorite French fashion house, Celine, when I noticed that they added an emerald colored resin cuff to their collection! Gasp! Take a look below....they are soooooo beautiful!!:

I'm quite happy that I can channel the look of Celine with the Tina Frey Designs cuffs! Here are more images of the Wonder Woman Cuff in different colors which are perfect for spring!

How exciting! I was featured on the Adventurer Profile of the Adventure School today! You can read the entire blog interview by clicking here. They must think I am adventure-worthy!

What does The Adventure School do? Let me explain...the next time you have an event or want to do something memorable, you must look up them up! They are an event planning company that creates immersive adventure environments!

They can plan an event for you in faraway and enchanting locales. Think destination parties, weddings, staff retreats, honeymoons, etc. Imagine an extreme adventure in the uninhabited wilderness of Mongolia...I've always wanted to travel on the Transiberian Railroad to this faraway land!

...or a destination party in Tanzania and Zanzibar

How awesome would that be?!

Maybe I will have to dream up a big adventure and have them plan a legendary party and you will all be invited! Someday...soon!

Guggenheim Museum New York

One of my favorite museums in New York City is the Guggenheim Museum! Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned to design this building in 1943 and houses the museum established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.

This iconic building is truly a landmark with the spiral ramp that leads to the domed skylight. It is a really unique way to present contemporary art.

This is one of my favorite views of the spiral ramp from the interior looking up.

Imagine how thrilled I was to be included in the Guggenheim Museum Shop! If you can make it there for a visit, it is definitely worth the trip because the architecture of this building is so amazing.

You can also shop through their online store and find the Pedestal Egg Cups!

And the Small Pedestal Bowl in Pink! It is a wonderful Spring color!

If Tina Frey Designs had a fairytale house, this is what it would look like!

These pictures were taken by Jamie! This house actually exists in San Francisco but I have never actually seen it! I'm so glad she took pictures and sent them to me! Can you see the rabbit figure peering out from the front window? I wonder if they have rabbits inside!

It is surrounded by running rabbits all around the house! It's almost exactly like my logo! But this is a little crazy...

Today was such a lovely warm spring day in San Francisco! We had a nice long walk with the dog in Lands End.

The amazing view of the Golden Gate Bridge. It is quite wonderful to live in San Francisco!

Wallpaper Magazine Custom Covers 2011

I'm a BIG fan of Wallpaper* Magazine and read my monthly subscription cover to cover. If you have not heard about it...it's a magazine about Design, Interiors, Fashion, Art, and Lifestyle...all sorts of inspiring things I love reading about!

For their upcoming Handmade 2 issue which will be out in August, I got to design my very own cover! Here is my creation which will be printed on the COVER of my personal issue of Wallpaper Magazine!

You can view the Wallpaper* Gallery of covers created by all the other readers of the magazine. Many are really well done and it is nice to see how different and creative people get. If only my handmade resin designs were actually on the covers of the real magazine on the newsstands, it would be really cool! But for now, I will settle for my own custom cover...which is already pretty darn cool that they can do that!

Perfect Lazy Sunday...

Here is a perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday morning in San Francisco. To start the day right, I would suggest going to a very special place called Outerlands. They open at 10am for brunch on Sundays and it is worth getting there early to put your name down on the list for a table before they open. Yes, it is that good...

Of course, the key to getting there early is to head over to Trouble Coffee while you wait for Outerlands to open!

If you are already hungry, you must try the cinnamon toast from Trouble Coffee because it is AMAZING! This picture does not do it justice. I ~~ate~~ inhaled it too quickly to get a photo! Sorry!

Finally...the breakfast at Outerlands is served! That's poached eggs and greens with yellow corn grits and grated parmesan, and the savory dutch pancake with bacon and maple syrup. Sooooooo delicious!

After the fantastic breakfast, you can head over to General Store. They have a great store that carries unique things and vintage items. You can also check out their blog!

Then you can wander over to Mollusk Surf Shop to stock up on the latest surf boards, wetsuits, and all things surf related. I found the space to be really cool and inspiring. Here are the photos from the shop:

I've been a big admirer of the artist, George Stoll, ever since I saw images of his beautiful installations. He was born in 1954 and produced installations from everyday objects like sponges, Tupperware, toilet paper, and paper towels. His pieces appear to be ordinary objects but upon closer inspection, they are actually carefully cast or sculpted objects. I love his philosophy about "making something imperfect. Something that has a human man-made quality". I simply love the colors assembled en mass on the simple white background and shelves!!

(I can't remember where I got these photos of George Stoll's work from since I collected them over a period of time. If you know, please feel free to email me and I will update this post to give appropriate credit or link to your website!)

Can you tell this was a big inspiration for my display at the New York International Gift Fair and Paris Maison & Objet exhibitions?!

I really appreciate the handmade organic quality and imperfectness of the pieces. I also love the pop of color against the plain white wall. Enjoy!

Seattle Met Fashion Shoot

Primary Colors

I'm loving the bright colors for Spring and was inspired to put together this primary-color-themed post.

note: I LOVE my new Prada Brogues or Wingtips from the Spring 2011 collection! The colored soles inspired me to pair them with the bright blue matching tights. It started the whole thing with my colored tights...which led me to the red tights...and so the inspiration continues.

Unplugged at Maison & Objet - January 2011

Here is the last of the photos from the mini-exhibitions at Maison & Objet. This one is called Unplugged. It looks like the theme was about unplugging in the sense of "letting go" to a simpler life. This looks a lot like very stylish luxury camping! But no one said the simpler life had to be uncomfortable!

Haute Tension at Maison & Objet - January 2011

This is another mini-exhibition at Maison & Objet called Haute Tension. I only managed to photograph from the outside of the display since I only had time to take photos in the morning before the show started. Unfortunately, someone was vacuuming inside in the morning and I didn't have a chance to go back and photograph the designs inside...bummer!

The photos from the outside are still pretty interesting!

At the Maison & Objet show in Paris, there are always little mini-exhibitions which feature a collection of amazing curated designs in the theme of the mini-exhibition. The one below is called "Hypnotic". The designs are indeed hypnotic!

Greetings from Paris! I had a chance to visit the Musée des Arts Décoratifs where they have a beautiful museum boutique called 107 Rivoli.

They had a jewelry display that I thought was just amazing!

The jewelry was displayed on the cool and creepy dolls!

Coincidentally, you can find Tina Frey Designs jewelry here...

That larger naked doll is modeling the Macy Necklace in Signal Red, Snow White, and Frost. She looks very content being draped in the jewels!

The little naked doll is wearing the Macy Necklace in Grey. The Plump O Ring with the diamond is also in the display case. If you are wearing Tina Frey Jewelry, why would you need to wear anything else?!
